Your safety is the most important because if you are injured or killed then you will not be able to help the casualty and you will be adding to the problem.

All blood and certain body fluids that may contain blood should be considered potentially infectious, and precautions should be taken to protect you against them. No patient is to be treated without the protection of latex or vinyl gloves or one way valve because of the possibility of bloodborne pathogens such as HIV/ AIDS and Hepatitis B transmission.

The FA must learn to recognise potentially hazardous situations in cases such as:

  • Road accidents ‑ oncoming traffic, fuel spillage, unstable vehicles.
  • Gas and poisonous fumes
  • Electricity lines
  • Fire and collapsing buildings.
